The Warm Light Of Italy

September 13, 2016

I'm working in Italy for the month of September. What a time to be in this ancient yet timeless land. This is a pure Airbnb trip and the first stop in Lake Como turned out to be a gem. The newly renovated apartment in a two hundred year-old building was the childhood home of the owner's mother. It was on a tiny piazza that sat in the shadows of a 17th century castle. Wow.

Lago di Como has been ruled by Romans, Etruscans and Celts. It was colonized by Caesar, it was vandalized by Goths and Ostrogoths. Como was a merry-go-round of French, Austrian and Spanish rule until the middle of the 19th century when it became Italian. Today's Lago di Como is at once international and acutely Italian. Italian auto drivers have death wishes. Italian communication is impossilbe without the use of hands. And dinner starts at 9pm, about the time Americans are thinking about bed.

This is the view of the north finger of Lago di Como this morning which gives you a look at the Swiss Alps in the distance.
