Mesquite Flat Dunes
Sitting atop a clay base at sea level elevation are the dunes of Mesquite Flat. The primary source of the dune sands is probably the Cottonwood Mountains which lie to the north and northwest. The tiny grains that form the dune sculptures began as much larger pieces of solid rock.
This is another location in Death Valley where two Star Wars movies were filmed.
