The Alps to the north of Lake Como act like a siren’s call to vacationers enjoying the lake. We had an urge to explore one day so we drove north into the mountains following a road that parallels the Mera river. This river is the collection of hundreds of mountain streams descending from the surrounding peaks. The route is dotted by villages hugging the river, each one more quaint than the next.
One of those villages is Ponteggia with its beautiful bell tower and majestic views of the towering Alps. Ponteggia is just a kilometer or so from the Swiss border. Even though you're still in Italy, you can feel the orderliness of the Swiss. The road eventually takes you to the towns of St. Moritz and Celerina where the Winter Olympic Games were played in 1924.
