In SoCal, near the ocean, we've been fortunate to avoid the terrible fires that have devastated so many areas of the state. I hadn't been to a wildfire area previously and we didn't know that we were heading to one in Joshua Tree NP this week. I love to shoot in a certain wide open grove in the north of the park where mature, intricate trees dotted the area in wonderful patterns. We timed the trip to pass through the grove during golden hour. What we found were the charred out remains of a nasty fire; such a loss. Eventually we found this spot that appeared to mark the edge of the main fire which you can see in this tree's trunk. Ever evolving you can see new growth happening in a young tree in the lower left corner of the frame
