Birch trees in the northeast have been under stress from a variety of sources. Birches are naturally short-lived and extreme weather or bug infestations can deliver the species a blow.
This little stand of mature birches is rare. It was found in the middle of a farmer's field in northern Vermont. The fact that it's in the middle of the field reveals the farmer's respect for the species, choosing to let them grow rather than take their land for crops.
